The Vancouver Olympics Lead Into the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympics

It has been a year of firsts for the Olympics. The first opening ceremonies held indoors in Vancouver. An Olympic torch designed to burn in colder temperatures than any torch in Olympic history. But even as Canadian hearts were warmed by the torch’s journey across Canada, by the Olympic Flame and what it represents, neighbors to the south were preparing for another historic first—the Youth Olympics in Singapore.

From August 14 through August 26, 2010, 3600 young athletes between 14 and 18 years of age will be competing at the first ever Youth Olympic Games in Singapore. Half a million spectators are anticipated for this historic event, which will feature 26 sports and cultural and educational programs.

The core Olympic values of excellence, friendship, and respect will combine with a celebration of Singapore’s diverse culture. With the theme of “Blazing the Trail”, this event is one the sports enthusiast won’t want to miss.

The competitions will include aquatics, archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, canoe/kayak, cycling, equestrian, fencing, football (soccer), gymnastics, handball, hockey, judo, modern pentathlon, rowing, sailing, shooting, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, triathlon, volleyball, weightlifting, and wrestling.

Tickets for the opening and closing ceremonies are only available through a balloting system, as organizers anticipate an early sellout for this historic event.

Singapore is one of only three city-states in the entire world, and boasts a diverse culture with one the highest percentages of foreigners in the world. Singapore is considered a tropical rainforest climate with average temperatures in the 70-90F range.

Singapore is a popular travel destination. The Orchard Road shopping district is a tourist favorite, as are its casino resorts. Singapore’s government has been working to develop a reputation as a center for arts and culture and to transform the city into “a cosmopolitan gateway from the East to the West.”

In Singapore you will find World-class athletes in 26 different sports. An exotic city which is rich in both traditional culture and modern progress and what is sure to be a once-in-a lifetime historic event. There will never be a better opportunity to enjoy an event tour like this.
